Woke up this morning hoping for some favorable weather… Quick check shows predictions of scattered rain tapering off over the the course of the day and with each mile east. Not perfect, but way better than yesterday and certainly heading in the right direction.
We packed up, ate in the hotel, then headed out. It was still pretty early, and with clouds and drops a little dark. Quick check of the map to get a general sense of direction and we are off. Down the hill towards the river then a right towards downtown then a left over the Market Street Bridge.
The over all feel of the place; weather, lighting, river, and the bridge itself seemed to whisper… just couldn’t quite make it out. One flavor of the conversation is captured in the maps, but the picture above touches another aspect that remains elusive. Ghosts or spirits of another time?
After a short bit of Highway 2 we are back into the small stuff. The promise of twists and turns and who knows what else.
It didn’t take all that long to find the what else! A gnome house. Not sure I can (or even care to) explain all this. Look the pictures over, zoom in and explore all the details. Each time I look there are more things that make me smile. I did mark this on the map with a note expressing hope that the creator will find this page and know how much it was appreciated. I would love to see a comment below one day with some details about this wonderful roadside find. Anyone want to have a little fun matchmaking feel free to forward this link (or the FB post) to a friend, who can forward it to…
Not long after the Gnomes came a pair of covered bridges, then Somerset and lunch. We picked the perfect weekend to be passing through. Car show and flea market/antiques sale. Turns out the car guys are mostly early morning types so by the time we were done eating and got over to the lot where they were set up most had already packed up. There were some really special vehicles on display to be sure.
As we wondered off after lunch we started following signs to the Flight UA Flight 93 memorial. Not on the plan, but definite must see. One of those places I don’t ‘enjoy’, but more of civic duty. We really must maintain a collective memory of the reality of this world we live in. I jotted details on the map pin so won’t repeat them here.
Nearby the memorial is another covered bridge, this one open for traffic. I am always so tickled by the wonderful folks we meet along the way. Hey, if you are reading this put a smile on someones face: greet them with a wave and a grin that says hello. Make this country a better place with this simple gesture of welcome and kindness.
Pizza for dinner. We were passing through country with not a lot of big city options so when we did a search for ‘restaurants’ and “Fox’s” came up it seemed like a good one to try. Ding ding ding ding… winner! Looks like today’s theme was cars ;-).
Another seventy miles or so to the Air B&B so off we go. Oh, and a wonderful sunset, weatherman turned out to be right. Clearing throughout the day and every mile as we headed east. Great day on the road, we really could get used to this. Funny, we had imagined being home on Thursday. Then pushed to Friday. Then we sorta stopped keeping track. Tomorrow is Sunday, do we really have to go home at all?
As always, enjoy following our route on the map below and be sure to check out the additional photos and narrative there as well…
